12 secrets to styling

Textural Lover

style with texture

Texture is the magical essence that can make an interior space pop, that surface quality that immediately makes you want to feel it. As a certified texture lover, I love to play with texture in how I dress and in every room I design. I love to create tactile experiences. An exaggerated weave on a handwoven woollen rug to walk over in bare feet; a mix of velvet and silk cushions to sink into; a piece of Calacatta marble that you just have to run your hands over…

Texture is an important part of interior design because I believe that it helps dictate how a room feels on first glance. While the colour of a room affects how warm or cool it feels, texture can influence the tone and weight of a room. Some things feel just as they appear, this is called actual texture. Some things look like they are rough but are actual smooth this is called implied texture. Textures add beautiful sensory layers to the story of a room. A room without layers of texture, for me, will always be a one-dimensional experience.

TIPS

  • Add a textured deep cut pile rug or handwoven carpet to add dimension and depth to an interior.
  • Add greenery and floral arrangements and play with foliage. I especially love entrance areas with clipped topiaries, rustic herbs and premium coir doormats; and in coastal living areas, I’ve even placed a silvery leafed olive tree indoors for a true wow factor.
  • Custom cotton, linen, wool or silk boucle furniture (especially ottomans) are the perfect way to add rugged texture to a room.
  • Embrace the imperfections of a hand-beaded, hand-painted chandelier; a limewashed wall or a rustic wood-framed mirror.
  • Play with pattern – on bedheads, with a throw rug; with a feature wall
  • Favour natural fibres for organic texture and beauty.
  • Wall hangings that weave fibres over fibres add texture and poetry to any room.
  • Curtains in French linens and silk velvets will add a dreamy element to the bedroom.
