Why is a focal point so important? Well it is one of the most important elements of a beautiful interior. When I am working with my clients, we choose what we want to be the focal of a room – a fireplace, a chandelier, on ornate bedhead, a work of art?
I also love to create focal points with bold pieces of furniture, for example a beautiful cobalt sofa with white piping; or an exceptional Moroccan lantern. The focal point doesn’t need to be fixed, it can be floral displays, or artworks that you constantly rotate around your house. If you choose a large display case or bookshelf, make sure you keep it fresh, with decorative objects, plants and well-organised shelves.
TIPS
- Choose just one focal point in a room or the space becomes too busy.
- Consider a living room with views outside to a water feature for maximum serenity.
- If you can’t decide what should be your focal point, work with the biggest item in the room.
- I love to make the garden views a focus point of living spaces, with beautiful feature windows framing the view, with generous curtains adding to the effect.
- A gallery of artworks or collectibles makes a fantastic focal point.
