Poached Pears

Ingredients list

  • 4 pears
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp Earl Grey or English Breakfast tea (you can also use red wine)
  • 4 cups of boiling water
  • 1 vanilla bean
  • 1 orange, juiced
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Orange peel strips
Optional ingredients;
  • Custard, cream or ice cream

Method

  • Clean and halve your pears, removing the cores.
  • Brew about 4 cups of tea in a pitcher for 5 minutes.
  • Transfer the brewed tea to a pot on the stove. Add sugar and bring to a boil. Stir in lemon juice.
  • Carefully place the pear halves into the pot, ensuring they are submerged. Add more water if needed to cover them.
  • Reduce heat and simmer for 8-12 minutes.
  • When ready to serve, remove pears from the liquid. Simmer the sauce in the pot until thick and syrupy.
  • Serve pears with the reduced sauce, accompanied by custard, cream, or ice cream.
Note:
  • Pears can be stored in the cooking liquid for up to 2 weeks or frozen for up to a year.
