Information
Prep: 55 mins | Cook time: 20 mins | Serves: 12
Ingredients list
- 500g unsalted butter – room temperature
- 2 cups caster sugar
- Zest of 3 oranges
- 7 cups plain flour
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup squeezed orange juice
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- ½ tbsp baking soda
Egg wash
- 1 egg and 3 tbsp of milk
- Sesame seeds to dress
Method
- Preheat the oven to 170 degrees Celsius (fan-forced).
- In a mixer (or with handheld beaters), cream your butter and sugar together until fluffy and pale in colour.
- In a separate bowl zest the oranges and set aside.
- To the creamed butter add the eggs, one at a time mixing until combined.
- Add 1 cup of flour and mix well.
- In a separate bowl, combine the orange juice, zest, vanilla, baking powder, and baking soda. Stir well until it fizzes.
- Add the creamed butter and sugar to the juice mixture. Then, gradually add the remaining flour and mix until a dough is formed. If it’s too sticky, add another tablespoon of flour until you reach a good consistency. If the mix feels too crumbly, you can add another egg or an extra splash of orange juice (or both).
- Shape the dough into a ball and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- On a clean board, create your cookies by experimenting with twists, knots, or spirals. Place them on a baking tray, brush with egg wash, and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
- Bake in the oven at 170 degrees for 20 minutes, or until your cookies are golden.
